9.26.24 i recently had the great delight of playing a game of RUMPUS with my good friend JONATHAN, fellow miniature maker and game developer aka smaller paul assumption. BEHOLD, his WONDROUS and TERRIFYING troupe, the FOREST of the CLEAR-EYED POWER*: i had also been busily sculpting in the week leading up to the game, a foolhardy and doomed endeavor that nevertheless produced two FINISHED models and one ALMOST FINISHED model: but i didn't have time to paint, so in the end i selected a MULDOTTIR by TANNER SIMPSO, a converted BARNDOOR STICKER by KEV ADAMS, and one of jonathan's own SQONKS that i converted to make it more steppy, and they became the GROVE of the SHUDDERING TOADSTOOL: SETUP
our troupes met in the court of the FAIRY KING, seeking riches and renown in a game of FREE-FOR-ALL RUMPUS. there are many other scenarios that we are working on, but a lot of testing has been focused on FREE-FOR-ALL to make sure it's still fun. rumpus is played on a 12x12 grid, so i used a 1 foot square of plywood and 1 inch foam tiles to make a simple stone checkerboard. i really like the classic, abstract feeling of a checkerboard; it reminds me of THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, and i also like the idea that the fairy king would build a literal life-size checkerboard somewhere in their kingdom. i've continued to work on the board in the days following the game, adding more stone variations, grass, and moss, and i am quite happy with how it's turning out.
each of us prepared our fairies by drawing two items and one magic each. in rumpus, items can be freely traded between fairies or left in your fairy house, but magic is unique to each fairy and can't be traded.
as well as the fairies of the GROVE of the SHUDDERING TOADSTOOL:
with all formalities concluded, it would soon be

ROUND 1 SMALL JOSIE strides across the board and places one of her items into a trap, hoping to catch MAB LIGHTFOOT unawares. TOMMY BLOODYBONES steps up to JOSIE, looking to fight, but rolls a 2 and has a MISHAP, losing 1 life. ROUND 2 JOSIE fights TOMMY and they TRADE BLOWS: each loses 1 life. TOMMY uses a CHALICE to drink JOSIE's blood for 1 life. JOSIE's TRAP goes off, but no one remembers why**: it's a SLIP N SLIDE TRAP! JOSIE slams into an obstacle and DIES. she melts into a BOG.

ROUND 3 WEE SHIFTY TAM uses MAGIC: a STENCH CLOUD forces TOMMY to retreat. JENNY BURCHES summons a FETCH to FIGHT TAM. she rolls a 1 and gets WILD MAGIC! the FAIRY KING makes TOMMY a champion and awards him a LOVELY CORDIAL. the FETCH fights TAM and DIES. the FAIRY KING is DELIGHTED when a 6 is rolled and THROWS AN ITEM onto the board. ROUND 4 CLACKY TIM spits UNGENT on TAM, who gains 1 life. MAB LIGHTFOOT eats 2 items and attempts to make a DOUBLE of herself. she rolls 3 dice, but 2 of them show 1s! WILD MAGIC! a nearby log transforms into 2 TRAPS, and the FAIRY KING gives TOMMY another treasure. MAB'S MAGIC DOUBLES JENNY'S SEEDS, the extra spilling onto the ground.
ROUND 5 TIM eats 4 items to gain 4 life and rings a BELL; all fairies back away. TOMMY BLOODYBONES blunders into 2 TRAPS! he suffers a BRANCH SLAP and falls into a PIT. TOMMY is DEAD; all fairies skip their ACTIONS in a MOMENT OF SILENCE. JENNY somberly walks toward the center of the board. ROUND 6 TAM picks up a stray item and uses a WHISTLE to force JENNY into the STENCH CLOUD. she loses 1 life and is on death's door. JENNY brandishes her CURSED WAND, but nothing seems to happen.*** ROUND 7 TIM PUNCHES JENNY to DEATH. MAB runs into the fray, but it is too late. the FAIRY KING throws an item onto the board. it's looking bad for the GROVE of the SHUDDERING TOADSTOOL.
ROUND 8 TAM TRANSFORMS their CURSED PETALS into something more useful and stomps toward MAB. MAB eats an item and tries to DOUBLE herself, but only DOUBLES her CURSED WAND. FINAL ROUND TAM KICKS themself with an ENCHANTED BOOT and flies forward toward the edge of the board. the ENCHANTED BOOT summons a BIG BLACK CLOUD, which presses MAB to the ground. TAM loses 1 life from hitting the edge of the board and MAB must use her action to BREATHE. the game will be decided by FORLORN FISTICUFFS.
FORLORN FISTICUFFS TAM and MAB move to the center of the board. they must FIGHT until one of them is KILLED. TAM attacks first and delivers a CRUSHING BLOW. MAB splits into 2 FAIRIES with 1 life each. TAM promptly SMUSHES the original MAB, but the copy remains. It is able to make 1 paltry attack before TAM BEATS IT TO A PULP. The FOREST of the CLEAR-EYED POWER is TRIUMPHANT!
   CONCLUSION
what a lovely game. i think this was the first time i played a tabletop game where everything on the table had been built and painted either by me or my adversary? and it is just an indescribably delicious feeling, to see all your lil GUYS, running around on lil STONES and ducking behind lil WALLS and doing mischief. i want to thank my son MILES, he offered one of his CLAY SLUGS from his CLAY SLUG ARMY to be used as an obstacle, and i believe that was an important factor in my defeat as it turned into 2 traps that killed my most ferocious fairy. i also want to thank jonathan for enduring the most annoying quality in the game, MERCURIAL, i have tried my best now to make it even worse and i could not have done it without you. and finally, thank you everyone for reading this RUMPUS REPORT, may you carry it always with you in your heart.
